Future of 224 students hangs in balance
The present and future of 224 young students of the traditional Sabokhali Secondary School in Chitalmari upazila under Bagerhat district seem to be hanging in the balance today because of the capricious nature of the sun or rain is a cruel uncertainty for them.
Instead of having a roof over their heads and dreaming with books and notebooks, they spend a large part of their day under the shade of a tree or under the open sky.
This school, established in 1967, has been a beacon of light in the area for a long time, but today it is suffering from extreme neglect and crisis. Although the number of students in the school has exceeded two hundred, the number of classrooms has not increased in proportion.
Due to the inadequacy of classrooms compared to the demand, the teachers are struggling to conduct regular educational programmes.
They are forced to teach in the school grounds, sometimes sitting under old banyan trees.
These ignorant children have to fight the sun and rain while taking classes under the open sky.
If the weather gets a little bad, their studies come to a halt, and the scheduled classes are canceled.
The students of this institution have been enduring this hardship for ages, but no permanent solution has been found.
Not only is there a shortage of classrooms, but the old school building has become a bigger threat.
The dilapidated building has cracks on its walls, plaster is falling off, and even the floor has cracks. During the rainy season, the interior is flooded with water from leaking tin roofs.
Teachers and students have to risk their lives to teach in such a dangerous building.
Along with this, there is a lack of modern educational materials; the students here are unable to keep up with the pace of time due to the damaged whiteboards and lack of access to digital classes.
Headmaster Bidab Bhajan Mondal said that the construction of a new four-story building is the need of the hour to ensure that students study in a healthy and normal environment.
A written application has also been made to the concerned department through the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) in this regard.
Limon Biswas Yunus, president of the school management committee, has also strongly demanded the construction of a new building quickly.
