BRTC begins free driving training for 700 freshers
The Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) has launched the sixth round of free light motor vehicle driving and basic maintenance training for 700 freshers, including female trainees, at 11 training institutes and centres across the country.
The four-month training programme began on Sunday under the Skills for Industry Competitiveness and Innovation Programme (SICIP), funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
BRTC Chairman Mir Ahmed Tarikul Omar formally inaugurated the programme at a ceremony at the BRTC Training Institute in Tejgaon on Sunday morning. Senior officials of the corporation concerned were present.
Engineer Fatima Begum, general manager (IWCS and Training) of BRTC, said 700 freshers would receive the training free of cost in this round.
Launched in February 2025, the programme aims to provide driving and basic maintenance training to a total of 8,000 people by December 2028.
So far, 3,500 trainees have completed the training in the first five rounds, she said.
“The government is making its strides to ensure road safety. Creating skilled drivers is one the major requirement to do so,” Fatima Begum said.
She said BRTC was providing free light vehicle driving training to freshers under two separate projects — the ADB-funded SICIP and the World Bank-funded Road Safety Programme.
The initiatives aim to develop skilled drivers so that they can find decent employment opportunities both at home and abroad, she added.
According to Fatima Begum, trainees will receive Tk 8,000 as a transport allowance and Tk 4,000 as a refreshment allowance, based on their daily attendance.
Those who successfully complete the training will receive certificates and professional driving licences, she said.
The 11 training institutes and centres are located in Tejgaon, Gazipur, Uthuli, Sirajganj, Rangpur, Sylhet, Cumilla, Chattogram, Tungipara, Jhenaidah and Barishal.
The programme is expected to help freshers develop practical driving and vehicle maintenance skills while preparing them for employment in the transport sector.
