Opposition alliance launches southern march

A 778-vehicle convoy carrying leaders, activists and supporters of the Jamaat-e-Islami-led 11-party alliance set out from Dhaka on Friday for a long march towards Khulna and Kushtia, crossing the Padma Bridge after paying around Tk7.75 lakh in tolls.
The convoy crossed the bridge at around 10:00am, nearly an hour and a half after beginning its journey from the south gate of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque at around 8:30am, following a rally.
According to data from the Padma Bridge toll plaza, the convoy comprised microbuses, cars, jeeps and various other types of vehicles.
The opposition alliance had earlier estimated that 600-700 vehicles would join the march from Dhaka, with more expected to join along the route from different districts. It expects the convoy to grow to more than 1,500 vehicles by the time it reaches Kushtia.
Leaders, activists and supporters from 19 districts are expected to participate in the programmes. The march will pass through Khulna, Jashore and Jhenaidah before concluding in Kushtia.
Alliance leaders said the programme marked the third phase of their long-march campaign. The first march was held towards Chattogram on 5 September, followed by another towards Rangpur on 19 September.
Covering around 410 kilometres, Friday’s programme is considerably longer than the previous two phases.
As part of its wider political programme, the alliance has announced a grand rally in Dhaka on 14 November. Its leaders have also indicated plans for possible long marches along the Dhaka-Sylhet and Dhaka-Barishal routes.
