BD women’s football team draw with Myanmar

The Bangladesh women’s football team concluded their Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games campaign with a draw.

On Monday, in their final group-stage match at Osaka’s Nagai Stadium in Japan, Bangladesh women’s football team-led by players like Ritu Porna Chakma, Tohura Khatun & Co. played out a goalless draw with Myanmar women’s football team.

Myanmar are ranked 52 places higher than Bangladesh in the FIFA rankings and hold the advantage in terms of overall strength.

Yet, Bangladesh had harbored some optimism regarding this specific group match-a sentiment echoed by Head Coach Peter Butler and Captain Maria Manda prior to the game. Ultimately, however, they had to settle for a draw.

In their two previous encounters with Myanmar, Bangladesh had recorded one win and one loss, yesterday’s result mirrored that balance.

Bangladesh’s direct path to the quarter-finals had already been closed after defeats to North Korea and South Korea in their first two group matches.

A victory by a large margin against Myanmar might have offered a slim chance of advancing to the last eight as the third-placed team, but the goalless draw extinguished that possibility.

Bangladesh did not lag significantly behind Myanmar in terms of ball possession. the red-and-green out-fit held the ball for 48 percent of the match. However, their attack lacked sharpness.

Throughout the game, Bangladesh managed only three shots at the Myanmar goal, none of which were on target.

Conversely, Myanmar took eight shots at the Bangladesh goal, with two on target. Both were skillfully saved by Bangladesh goalkeeper Rupna Chakma. Thus, the main positive for Bangladesh in this goalless draw was keeping a clean sheet.

In the preceding two matches, the Bangladeshi defense had faced a barrage of attacks. After losing 10-0 to North Korea in the opener, they suffered a 6-0 defeat to South Korea in the second match.

This marked the second time the Bangladesh women’s football team participated in the Asian Games.

Their record in the 2023 edition was also two losses and one draw across three matches.

They conceded a total of 15 goals on that occasion-one fewer than in the current tournament.
