MP Gazi Nazrul’s claimed 2nd wife found hanging

Law enforcement authorities have begun investigating the death of a 19-year-old woman whose body was recovered from a residential flat in the capital on Sunday evening, raising fresh questions over the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The deceased, Mariam Khatun, was found hanging inside Flat No. 203 on the third floor of Building No. 5 at NAM Bhaban under Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.
Police said they were informed of the incident and rushed to the building, while the exact cause of her death had not been established immediately.
Ibne Mizan, deputy commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Tejgaon division, said Mariam’s body was recovered from the flat and that members of the Criminal Investigation Department’s forensic team had been called to the scene.
“Her body was found hanging,” he said, adding that law enforcement personnel were at the building and were working to determine what had happened.
The circumstances surrounding the death remained under investigation, and authorities had yet to disclose whether they had found any indication of foul play.
Mariam had recently come into the public spotlight after a video involving Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam circulated widely on social media.
The lawmaker later said the young woman shown in the footage was his second wife.
Gazi Nazrul, who was elected from Satkhira-4 for the third time in the 13th national parliamentary election on a Jamaat-e-Islami nomination, faced organisational action from the party following the controversy.
On 22 July, Jamaat-e-Islami expelled him after an internal investigation into allegations surrounding the matter.
The party subsequently notified the Speaker, the Election Commission and other relevant authorities, seeking necessary action.
The MP had identified the woman in the circulated footage as his second wife, saying they had married on 17 June in a family ceremony.
Contemporary reports said he maintained that the marriage had taken place with the consent of his first wife.
The death of Mariam has now brought the matter back into the focus of law enforcement authorities, with police and forensic personnel examining the scene and the circumstances leading to her death.
Police did not immediately provide further details about the investigation or say whether anyone had been detained in connection with the incident.
The body was recovered on Sunday evening as officers and forensic personnel began examining the flat.
The findings of the forensic examination and any subsequent investigation are expected to shed light on the circumstances of the death.
