BD women’s hockey team concede 13 goals in opener

In the Asian Games hockey competition, the Bangladesh men’s hockey team lost their opening match to South Korea 5-0. On Sunday, in the Asian Games women’s hockey competition, Bangladesh women’s hockey team suffered a 13-0 defeat to China women’s hockey team.

Bangladesh women’s hockey team, placed in Pool-A, are set to play its second match against Malaysia women’s hockey team today.

The match at the Kawasaki Juko Stadium in Japan marked the Bangladesh women’s hockey team’s debut in the Asian Games.

It was a disastrous start; the defense was completely dismantled by a formidable opponent like China. China went on a scoring spree in every quarter.

From the fourth minute to the 57th, Bangladesh spent the match essentially counting the goals conceded. Zhong Jiaqi scored a hat-trick for China (in the 4th, 13th, and 29th minutes).

Additionally, Chen Yang (12th and 18th minutes), Zhou Meirong (38th and 51st minutes), and Chen Yi (41st and 57th minutes) scored two goals each.

Li Hong (13th minute), Zhang Ying (27th minute), Ma Ning (32nd minute), and Yang Liu (36th minute) struck one time each on the board.

On the other hand, Bangladesh failed to score even a consolation goal. To make matters worse, Kona Akter received a yellow card in the 60th minute.

In this 12-team event, the top two teams from each pool will advance to the semi-finals. The final is scheduled for October 2. Teams that fail to reach the semi-finals will participate in placement matches.

This year’s Asian Games women’s hockey tournament involves not only the battle for medals but also the stakes for qualifying for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

The gold-medal-winning team will secure direct entry into the main Olympic tournament, while teams finishing between second and fifth place will compete in the 2028 FIH Olympic qualification tournament.
