Fuel prices rise by Tk20 a litre

The government on Sunday raised the retail prices of all four major petroleum products by Tk20 per litre.
Under the new rates, diesel will cost Tk135 per litre, up from Tk115; octane Tk165, from Tk145; petrol Tk160, from Tk140; and kerosene Tk155, up from Tk135.

The government had kept the prices unchanged throughout September, with diesel at Tk115, kerosene at Tk135, octane at Tk145 and petrol at Tk140 per litre.

The previous major adjustment came in April, when diesel was raised by Tk15 per litre and octane, petrol and kerosene by Tk20, Tk19 and Tk18 respectively.

The Energy and Mineral Resources Division announced the new prices in a gazette notification signed by its Senior Assistant Secretary Md Enamul Haque on Sunday.

The prices had remained unchanged in September, with diesel selling at Tk115, kerosene at Tk135, octane at Tk145 and petrol at Tk140 per litre.

The last major price adjustment was made in April, when diesel prices were raised by Tk15 per litre, while the prices of octane, petrol and kerosene were increased by Tk20, Tk19 and Tk18, respectively.

Retail fuel prices have been reviewed under the automatic pricing mechanism since 2024. The adjustments take into account international oil prices, import costs, taxes and duties, exchange rates and other related expenses.

Earlier, the government set new retail prices for all types of fuel in Bangladesh, citing the continued impact of rising global oil prices.

The decision also coincides with the government’s ongoing negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for the next tranche of its multi-billion dollar loan.

The announcement came just hours after Mahdi Amin, the spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office, suggested during a press conference marking the government’s two-month anniversary that subsidies might be increased to keep fuel prices stable.

Since March 2024, Bangladesh has followed an automated pricing mechanism, where domestic fuel prices are adjusted every month in accordance with the fluctuations of the global market.
