Tarash joins nationwide tree plantation drive

Tarash Municipality has planted more than 200 tree saplings with the aim of transforming the municipality into a greener, more beautiful and environmentally friendly town, as part of the nationwide initiative to plant 250 million trees over five years.

The tree plantation programme was held on Wednesday at 5:00pm along Cremation Ground Road under the initiative of Tarash Municipality. The event was organised under the overall supervision of Municipal Administrator A.Z.M. Nahid Hasan. Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Nusrat Jahan attended the programme as the chief guest.

During the campaign, more than 200 saplings of fruit-bearing, timber, medicinal, ornamental and other environmentally beneficial tree species were planted on both sides of Cremation Ground Road.
The species included cassia, golden shower (sonalu), orchid tree (kanchan), flame of the forest (palash), arjun, Indian gooseberry (amloki), neem, white kurchi, jacaranda, royal poinciana (krishnachura), jarul, kadam and hijol.

Among the special guests and other attendees were Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Tarash Police Station Habibur Rahman, former convener of Tarash Municipal BNP Tapan Kumar Goswami, Member Secretary Abdul Bariq Khandakar, Joint Convener Saiful Khandakar, President of Tarash Press Club Sabbir Ahmed, Upazila Primary Education Officer Apel Mahmud, Election Officer Golam Azam, Cooperative Officer Dinabandhu Mridha, Youth Development Officer Taizul Islam, Fire Inspector Manjurul Islam, former convener of Upazila Jubo Dal Shah Alam Fakir and Jubo Dal leader Shukur Mirza.

Speaking on the occasion, UNO Nusrat Jahan said, “There is no alternative to tree plantation in addressing the challenges of climate change. Tarash Municipality’s greening initiative is highly commendable.”

Municipal Administrator A.Z.M. Nahid Hasan said the municipality would not only plant the trees but also ensure their regular care and maintenance so they grow properly.

He sought the cooperation of residents in protecting and nurturing the newly planted saplings.
