Minister Millat challenges Hasina

Why December? Come tomorrow

Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat challenged former ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Friday to return home immediately rather than wait until the end of the year, saying authorities were prepared to arrest her the moment she landed.

Speaking at an event in Ratanpur Union of Nabinagar upazila, he addressed reports suggesting Hasina, who has been living outside the country since being ousted, might return to Bangladesh by December 31.

“Why 31 December? Come tomorrow,” Millat said. “We will follow the legal process to receive you. A pair of handcuffs will be ready.”

Millat said Hasina must face trial for what he called “inhuman acts” and crimes against humanity committed against the Bangladeshi people during her tenure in office. He also accused the former government of large-scale corruption, alleging that public funds had been siphoned off for personal gain.

“The fascist government looted everything in the country to fill its own coffers,” he said. “But now they cannot enjoy the money they looted. They will return to Bangladesh and face the death penalty.”

The minister said the interim government had formally requested that the neighboring country holding Hasina and other officials who fled after her ouster send them back to face justice.

“We want to address the violation of the people’s rights and the looting of public funds through a fair judicial process,” Millat said.

Hasina’s exact whereabouts and her government’s response to the renewed calls for her return were not immediately available.

The remarks add to mounting pressure from Bangladesh’s interim authorities, who have repeatedly demanded her extradition to face trial over her administration’s conduct before she was removed from power.
