Nasir-Tamima acquitted
In a case filed on charges of adultery and fraud, cricketer Nasir Hossain and his wife Tamima Sultana Tammi have been acquitted by the court. The verdict was delivered on Wednesday by Dhaka’s Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Joshita Islam. Bench Assistant Ashutosh Bhowmik of the concerned court confirmed the matter.
Reacting after the verdict, plaintiff Rakib said that based on what the judge was saying at the time of the announcement, it seemed like it was pre-planned. He delivered the ruling after saying just two or three things. There were various pieces of evidence and 10 witnesses in the case, none of which he read out. I am not satisfied with this verdict.
Plaintiff’s lawyer Israt Hasan also expressed dissatisfaction with the ruling and announced she would appeal against it in a higher court. After the verdict, she alleged that for several days the defendant’s side had been saying in various ways that they were going to be acquitted.
“Still, with faith in the law, we continued the case. Even the plaintiff told me at various times that he had no money. I assured him of justice. The PBI investigated the case and found charges against them.” Lawyer Israt Hasan said, “If an adulterer and fraudster is sheltered in this manner, it amounts to injustice to the plaintiff.”
At the time of the verdict, defense lawyer Azizur Rahman Dulu and several others were present in court, as was plaintiff Rakib. After arguments from both sides were heard on May 6, the verdict date was fixed for Wednesday.
On that day, lawyer Israt Hasan argued on behalf of plaintiff Rakib, while lawyer Azizur Rahman Dulu represented Nasir and lawyer Mosleh Uddin Jasim represented Tamima. The plaintiff’s side requested the maximum punishment, while defense lawyers pleaded innocence and sought acquittal.
According to the case allegations, Tamima and plaintiff Rakib were married on February 26, 2011, and they have an eight-year-old daughter. However, while still in a marital relationship with Rakib, Tamima and cricketer Nasir Hossain married on February 14, 2020.
When photos of Tamima and Nasir’s wedding circulated on the internet on February 14, 2021, Rakib took notice. Subsequently, on February 24, he filed the case at the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court under Sections 497, 500, and 34 of the Penal Code. On September 30 of that year, investigating officer Sheikh Mizanur Rahman submitted a report against all three accused.
On February 9, 2022, the trial began with charges framed against Nasir and Tamima, though Nasir’s mother-in-law Sumi Akter was discharged from the case. On March 6 of that year, their lawyer Kazi Nazibullah Hiru filed a revision petition against the charge framing order at the Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court.
