The incident occurred in Amtoil village under Paschim Juri Union. Rafiqul Islam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Juri Police Station, confirmed the matter.
The deceased were Ananya Das, 7, son of Amal Das of Amtoil village, and Durjoy Das, 12, son of Narayan Das of Bhairab Bazar in Sreemangal.
The two were cousins. Ananya was a second-grade student, while Durjoy was in the fourth grade.

On Wednesday morning, Ananya and Durjoy went fishing with a rod near a culvert close to the house. Later, a local resident who had gone to the area to cut grass spotted the children floating in the water.
Locals rescued the children and took them to Juri Upazila Health Complex, where the attending physician declared them dead.
