Minister urges unity to strengthen democracy, counter anti-state plots

Liberation War Affairs Minister Ahmed Aazam Khan has called on people, regardless of their political affiliations and opinions, to work together to strengthen democracy, preserve national unity and ensure state stability.

He made the call at a discussion meeting organised by the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs at the Liberation War Museum in Agargaon, Dhaka, at noon on Saturday to mark National Revolution and Solidarity Day, according to a ministry press release.

Describing November 7 as a significant day in Bangladesh’s history, the minister said the establishment of democracy and social justice had been among the key pledges of the country’s independence.

However, obstacles had been created at different times after independence to the exercise of democratic rights, leaving people exposed to torture, oppression, imprisonment, persecution and enforced disappearances, he said.

In such a critical and uncertain period, patriotic people and members of the armed forces, under the leadership of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, came forward to protect the country, he added.

Ahmed Aazam Khan said Ziaur Rahman had not only protected the country’s independence but had also taken responsibility for leading it through a critical period.

He credited him with reviving the democratic system and contributing to the foundations of modern Bangladesh through economic reconstruction, the development of state institutions and progress in different sectors.

The minister said the current democratic government, led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, was taking the country forward by upholding Ziaur Rahman’s statecraft, patriotism and spirit of national unity.

He also stressed the need to resist activities that create division and confusion in national life, saying democratic values, the spirit of independence and national interests must be protected.

Mutual respect, tolerance and national solidarity were essential to building a prosperous, stable and democratic Bangladesh, he said.

He urged political parties, social organisations and people from all walks of life to play responsible roles from their respective positions.

The meeting was chaired by Md Abul Hasanath Humayun Kabir, acting secretary of the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs.

Dhaka-6 MP Ishraque Hossain, Daily Jugantor Editor Abdul Hye Sikder, Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Muktijoddha Dal President Ishtiaque Aziz Ulfat, and Daily Times of Bangladesh Advisory Editor and former National Press Club General Secretary Ilias Khan attended as special guests.

Before the discussion, the ministry paid tribute to Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman by placing a floral wreath at his mausoleum.
