HC to hear rule charges by bKash, Nagad

The High Court has scheduled a hearing for on Monday on a rule seeking to know why the arbitrary and excessive service charges imposed by mobile financial service (MFS) providers bKash, Nagad and Rocket on customers should not be declared illegal, unconstitutional and contrary to law.

Earlier, on Monday , a High Court bench led by Justice Md Mazibur Rahman Mia fixed the date for the hearing.

Advocate Obaidullah Al Mamun Sakib appeared before the court on behalf of the petitioner.

Earlier, the High Court issued the rule, asking why the arbitrary and excessive service charges imposed by mobile financial service providers bKash, Nagad and Rocket on customers should not be declared illegal, unconstitutional and contrary to law.

The rule also sought to know why a separate Mobile Financial Services Act should not be enacted to regulate MFS service charges and ensure consumer protection and accountability.

The proposed legislation aims to ensure reasonable, fair and affordable MFS service charges, particularly for low-income people and those who remain outside the formal banking system.

A High Court bench comprising Justice Md Mazibur Rahman Mia and Justice Md Rezaul Karim issued the rule.

The secretaries to the Finance Division and the Posts and Telecommunications Division, the governor of Bangladesh Bank and other concerned authorities have been asked to respond to the rule within four weeks.

Advocate Obaidullah Al Mamun Sakib argued the writ petition on behalf of the petitioner. He had earlier filed the petition himself.
