Bodies of 2 young men found in Khulna
Police have recovered the bodies of two young men with gunshot wounds from the Atharobeki River in Rupsha upazila of Khulna district.
The bodies were found at about 11.30am on Monday in the Singher Char area, opposite to Rupsha Government College.
Police believe the two were shot dead and then thrown into the river.
The deceased were identified as Mehedi Hasan Sohag (35) and Rezaul Karim, also known as Alamin (30). According to police, they were members of B Company, a notorious criminal gang in Khulna. Sohag had bullet marks beside his eye, and Alamin had bullet marks under his chin and on his back.
Sohag’s home is in Rajapur village, Rupsha upazila. His father’s name is Md Abdullah. Locals said Abdullah once worked as a boatman at Jailkhana Ghat. Sohag later became involved with the criminal gang B Company. Alamin’s father’s name and further details of his identity are not known.
Eyewitnesses said they saw a body floating in the Singher Char area of the river on Sunday morning.
Later, when the water level dropped at low tide, they saw two bodies side by side in the same place.
One was wearing a shirt and jeans, the other a T-shirt and jeans. Police were then informed.
Local people identified them after making enquiries in nearby villages. Masum Khan, officer-in-charge of Rupsha police station, said both bodies bore multiple bullet marks.
It is thought they were shot dead and their bodies were thrown into the river.
The killings took place within the past 24 hours. Sohag and Alamin were members of B Company, and police are examining whether the murders arose from an internal dispute between them.
Earlier, at about 11pm on Saturday, miscreants hacked to death a young man named Shahidul Islam Colin (35) on Kashemia Jame Mosque Road in Labanchara police station area, Khulna metropolitan city.
The next evening, Sunday, Syed Humayun Kabir, a Tati Dal leader, was hacked to death behind Rayermahal Boro Mosque in the city. Police have arrested a man named Siddique Sheikh in connection with that killing.
With the recovery of the two bodies from the river on Monday, there have now been 75 murders in Khulna metropolitan area and district in the first 10 months of this year.
