Gas detected at Noakhali well
Gas was detected at a newly drilled well in Noakhali’s Companiganj upazila, with preliminary estimates suggesting a potential output of around 7 million cubic feet per day (mmcf/d).
The discovery was made on Monday at the Sundalpur South-1 well in Rampur union after drilling was completed, according to the Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company (Bapex).
Rakibul Hasan, drilling in-charge at Bapex, said the presence of gas was confirmed by igniting gas at the well after drilling operations ended.
The flame was later extinguished due to excessive heat, he said, adding that the Fire Service had been notified and the flame would be reignited in its presence.
However, the estimated daily output of 7mmcf is preliminary. The actual gas flow rate will be determined through a drill stem test (DST), which will help establish the well’s production potential.
The latest find follows another gas discovery at the Sundalpur-4 appraisal-cum-development well in Baro Charigaon village of Nabipur union in Senbagh upazila on 6 October.
Bapex had then estimated that the well could supply around 7mmcf of gas daily to the national grid.
