Another blow for LPG consumers

Consumers will have to pay Tk223 more for a standard 12kg liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinder in November, as the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) has raised the retail price to Tk2,060, adding to the growing burden of household energy expenses.

The new rate, which takes effect at 8pm on 2 November, represents an increase of Tk18.62 per kg, taking the price of privately marketed LPG to Tk171.68 per kg from Tk153.06 in October.

The latest adjustment follows another steep increase last month, when the price of a 12kg cylinder was raised by Tk252 to Tk1,837 from Tk1,585 in September.

In a press release, BERC Secretary Md Nazrul Islam Sarkar said the commission had refixed the retail price of privately marketed LPG at Tk171.68 per kg for November.

The price of autogas, the LPG used as fuel in motor vehicles, has also gone up, rising to Tk91.95 per litre from Tk84.62 in October.

Meanwhile, the consumer-level price of a 12.5kg cylinder supplied by state-owned LP Gas PLC has been fixed at Tk1,860, compared with Tk777 in October — an increase of Tk1,083.

The successive price adjustments are adding to the cost of cooking fuel for households and transport fuel for vehicle users, at a time when consumers are already facing pressure from rising energy expenses.
