PM calls for action against mental health stigma

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has called for wider access to mental health care across Bangladesh, urging collective efforts to eliminate the stigma and discrimination that prevent people from seeking treatment and support.

In a message issued ahead of World Mental Health Day 2026, to be observed on Saturday, the Prime Minister said mental health was closely linked to human dignity, family, society and the overall well-being of the state.

This year’s theme, “Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change”, highlights the importance of listening to the experiences, feelings and opinions of people living with mental health conditions, he said.

Tarique stressed the need for collective action to remove fear, shame, superstition and discrimination associated with mental illness.

He said the government was working to expand mental health services at upazila and union levels, develop skilled professionals, strengthen referral systems and extend technology-based counselling services.

The Prime Minister noted that many people in Bangladesh remained deprived of proper treatment and support because of social stigma, limited awareness, inadequate access to services and a shortage of trained personnel.

He also underscored the importance of mental health care for pregnant women, children and adolescents, while highlighting the need to introduce and strengthen mental health services in schools.

Calling for coordinated efforts, Tarique urged health professionals, families, educational institutions, the media and society as a whole to raise awareness and help ensure that no one felt ashamed or reluctant to seek mental health support.

He expressed hope that collective action would help build a humane, welfare-oriented and safe Bangladesh where everyone could lead a healthy and dignified life.
