Tarique, Takaichi bilateral talks today
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is set to hold bilateral talks with his Japanese counterpart, Sanae Takaichi, in Tokyo on Tuesday, with both sides seeking to strengthen their strategic partnership, boost trade and investment, and expand cooperation across key sectors.
The talks will begin at 11:45am local time at the Japanese Prime Minister’s Office, known as the Kantei, following a guard of honour for Tarique Rahman.
The two leaders are scheduled to hold discussions 12:10pm, followed by a joint press announcement. Takaichi will then host a luncheon for the Bangladesh Prime Minister.
At the beginning of the luncheon, the Japanese Prime Minister is expected to deliver a brief welcome remark and propose a toast, to be followed by a reply and return toast from Tarique Rahman.
According to Prime Minister’s Deputy Press Secretary Shahadat Hossain Shadhin, the discussions will cover bilateral relations, business, trade and investment, Japanese cooperation in various sectors and international issues.
The visit comes as Bangladesh seeks to translate its longstanding development partnership with Japan into greater trade opportunities, increased private investment and expanded cooperation in emerging economic sectors.
At a curtain-raiser press conference in Dhaka ahead of the visit, Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam said the Prime Minister’s four-day trip was expected to open new avenues for bilateral cooperation and attract fresh Japanese private investment in Bangladesh.
He said the implementation of the Bangladesh-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA), signed in February 2026, would be a key focus of the discussions, particularly efforts to expand access for Bangladeshi products to the Japanese market and strengthen business engagement between the two countries.
The two sides are also expected to explore cooperation in renewable energy, agriculture, science and technology, digital transformation, skills development and human resource development.
Several memorandums of understanding (MoUs) are under discussion for possible signing during the visit.
According to Siam, draft agreements cover agriculture, fisheries, human resource and skills development, domestic aviation, trade, environmental conservation and the modernisation of local government.
“We hope that many of these MoUs will be signed during the visit,” the Foreign Secretary said.
Beyond the political talks, Tarique Rahman is scheduled to deliver the keynote address at the Japan-Bangladesh Economic Forum and meet Japanese business leaders, as Bangladesh seeks to encourage greater Japanese investment and deepen commercial ties.
Japan has been a major development partner of Bangladesh, providing assistance for infrastructure, transport, energy and other development projects.
Dhaka is now looking to broaden that relationship through increased private-sector participation, technology transfer, industrial development and expanded opportunities for Bangladeshi exporters and workers.
The Prime Minister arrived in Tokyo on Monday morning for the four-day official visit at the invitation of Takaichi. He was received at Narita International Airport by Japanese State Minister for Foreign Affairs Nakasone Yasutaka.
