Early winter vegetables start arriving with soaring prices
Early winter vegetables including bean, radish, tomato, bottle gourd and other winter vegetables already begun appearing in capital’s kitchen markets in limited quantities earlier than usual, with higher prices.
Non-winter vegetables are also costly as their season has ended. This dual situation continues in the market, narrowing the scope for relief for common buyers.
Correspondingly, prices of fine rice in Dhaka’s retail markets have increased by Tk2-3 per kg over the past one to one-and-a-half weeks, while medium-quality rice has become costlier by Tk1-3 per kg.
Miniket rice is currently selling at Tk65-76 per kg, depending on the brand. Diamond, Manzur, and Sagar branded Miniket is priced at Tk74-75 per kg, up from around Tk72 a week ago. Rashid-branded Miniket is selling at Tk65 per kg, Tk2 higher than its price one to one-and-a-half weeks ago.
The price of fishes are also higher than other days of the week. There is no fish below Tk 200.
The price situation was observed during visits to Karwan Bazar, New Market, and Lalbagh.
Winter vegetables are being sold at 150 taka per kg for beans, 70 taka per piece for cauliflower, and 70 taka per kg for radish.
Most common vegetables, including brinjal, bitter gourd, barbati, dhundles, patal and kankrol, are being sold at 70 to 120 taka per kg.
However, cucumbers are available at a comparatively lower price of 50 to 60 taka. However, local cucumbers are being sold at 80 to 100 taka per kg.papaya is being sold at the lowest price, with its kg being sold at Tk 30.
The only relief from the high price of vegetables has come in the market for raw chilies. A few weeks ago, raw chilies were sold at Tk 200 per kg, but now, due to increased supply, they are being sold at Tk 120 to Tk 140 depending on quality.
Looking around the market further, it can be seen that there is no significant change in the price in the chicken market either. Broiler chicken is being sold at Tk 180 per kg and golden chicken at Tk 310 in the capital market. However, the price of eggs has also decreased by Tk 10 per dozen. A dozen is being sold at Tk 140 and four at Tk 50.
Egg sellers said that now farm chicken eggs are being sold at 155-160 per dozen.
Broiler chicken sellers said that for the past few weeks, the price of broiler chicken has been between Tk 180 and Tk 200. The price of beef is the same as before. It is being sold at Tk 800 per kg.
