‘Clean surroundings vital to dengue prevention’
Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Dr Shahadat Hossain said that spontaneous public awareness and active cooperation from city residents are essential to preventing dengue.
Everyone should keep their homes, rooftops and surroundings clean and ensure that water does not remain stagnant anywhere for more than three days.
He said the CCC is working on the ground with the highest priority to protect city residents from dengue. However, it is not possible to control dengue and other mosquito-borne diseases through spraying insecticides alone.
The mayor said this while speaking as the chief guest at a special crash programme organised for dengue prevention in Rampur Ward No. 25 on Thursday.
Organised in collaboration with the City Corporation, the programme included various activities to prevent dengue, including destroying mosquito breeding grounds, spraying insecticides and raising public awareness.
Rampur Ward No. 25 BNP is cooperating to ensure public participation in making the programme successful.
Mayor Dr Shahadat Hossain said dengue poses a public health risk. To combat the threat, the City Corporation is conducting a special mosquito-control crash programme in all 41 wards of the city.
Mosquito-control and cleanliness activities have been strengthened in each ward. Insecticides are being sprayed in different areas every morning and afternoon. In addition to destroying Aedes mosquito larvae, necessary measures are also being taken to control adult mosquitoes, he said.
He further said various awareness activities, including leaflet distribution and public announcements through loudspeakers, are being conducted to educate people about dengue prevention.
Mayor Dr Shahadat Hossain said the CCC is determined to make Chattogram a healthy and clean city. In this effort, cooperation from political parties, social organisations, voluntary organisations, the media and citizens from all walks of life is needed alongside the City Corporation.
“Effective resistance against dengue is possible only through collective efforts,” he said.
Also present at the event were Chief Sanitation Officer of the Dhaka Metropolitan City Corporation Captain Shamim Mohammad Khan, Malaria and Mosquito Control Officer Md Sharful Islam Mahi, and others.
