Bangladesh defeat Uzbekistan with an injury-time goal
Bangladesh have made a winning start in the AFC U-17 Women’s Qualifiers. They defeated the host team 2-1 in Uzbekistan on Thursday. With this defeat, the host nation Uzbekistan have been eliminated from the tournament.
Bangladesh took the lead in the third minute, with Almina scoring off a cross from Purnima Marma. However, Bangladesh could not hold onto the lead for long; the host team equalized in the 17th minute.
Following the 1-1 equaliser, both teams played on equal terms. The match was held at a venue in Uzbekistan; the YouTube broadcast revealed that there were no stands on one side of the pitch.
Throughout the game, Bangladesh coach Saiful Bari Titu could be heard shouting instructions at his players at the top of his voice.
The match remained deadlocked until the 90th minute. Bangladesh scored a goal during the six minutes of stoppage time; Runa Akter found the net with a shot from inside the box after receiving a pass from midfield.
Bangladesh have been drawn into Group H for the AFC U-17 Women’s tournament qualifiers.
Apart from hosts Uzbekistan, their other opponent is the Philippines. In the group’s opening match, the Philippines defeated Uzbekistan 4-0.
Since Bangladesh won by a margin of only one goal today, they trail in terms of goal difference.
Consequently, if the Philippines manage a draw against Bangladesh on October 11, they will advance to the final round due to a superior goal difference, even though both teams would be tied on four points.
Bangladesh has no alternative but to defeat the Philippines to qualify for the main tournament.
