Tk 88.92 lakh collected from Shahjalal (RA) Shrine

A total of Tk 8,892,966 was counted in the fourth phase of tallying donations from the boxes at the Hazrat Shahjalal (RA) shrine in Sylhet. The counting process, which began at 9:00am on Saturday (September 19) after a 34-day interval, concluded in the evening.

Sylhet City Corporation Administrator Abdul Quiyum Chowdhury confirmed the details at 6:00pm.
He said that, in addition to cash, foreign currencies from various countries, as well as gold and silver, were recovered.

Sylhet Divisional Commissioner Md Moshiur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner Abdullah Al Mamun, and other administrative officials were present during the counting.

Meanwhile, three large donation vessels (deg) and five donation boxes that had been sealed were opened on Saturday. The cash, gold and foreign currencies were subsequently counted. According to shrine authorities, the cash collected from the boxes and vessels amounted to Tk 8,892,966. Additionally, 1 bhori, 9 ana and 2 roti of gold were recovered.

Foreign currencies from 15 countries were also found, including 5 UK pounds, 3,994 Indian rupees, 5 Thai baht, 99.25 Saudi riyals, 29 Malaysian ringgit, 8.02 US dollars, 903 Omani baisa, 57.25 UAE dirhams, 1 Iraqi dinar, 21.50 Qatari riyals, 30.10 euros, 0.025 Bahraini dinar, 50 Papua New Guinean kina, 15 Chinese yuan and 5,000 Indonesian rupiah.

Previously, the donation boxes had been opened and the money counted in three separate phases. In the first phase, on June 22, Tk 1,765,549 in cash, along with gold ornaments and foreign currency, was recovered. Later, with the addition of a Tk 5 lakh cheque from the district administration’s fund, the total amount reached Tk 2,265,549.

Eighteen days later, on July 11, the donation boxes were opened for the second time, yielding Tk 4,710,153. Currencies from various countries, as well as gold and silver, were also found.

Most recently, on August 15, the donation boxes and the mannat (votive offering) vessels were opened for the third round, resulting in a total of Tk 7,088,672. On that occasion, gold and silver ornaments were recovered alongside domestic and foreign currencies.

This brings the total amount collected across the four rounds to Tk 22,957,340.

Officials said that, as always, a detailed account was released after the completion of the counting process in accordance with established procedures. The collected funds will be deposited into the shrine’s fund under the supervision of the administration.

The operation is being conducted under the supervision of the district administration, in line with a decision of a committee formed to ensure transparency and accountability in the shrine’s financial management.
