’36 July’ commemorated at Istanbul University international conference
The concept of “36 July”-which emerged as a symbol of the 2024 student-led mass uprising-was highlighted at the 2nd International Conference on Bangladesh Studies held at Istanbul University in Turkey.
An attendee currently in Istanbul for the conference shared this information, noting that the historic term “36 July”-coined by senior government official Shamsul Alam-is being discussed at the event.
This marks the attendee’s first visit to Turkey, offering an opportunity to explore the country alongside participating in the conference.
The concept of “36 July” gained prominence outside the standard calendar framework amidst the mass uprising of July-August 2024. By symbolically designating August 5 as “36 July,” the date evolved into a symbol of mass awakening, protest, and the aspiration for change in Bangladesh’s political history.
The mention of this concept at the international conference in Istanbul University serves as an example of the global academic interest surrounding Bangladesh’s mass uprising and the symbolic language associated with it.
Notably, former Senior Secretary Shamsul Alam was among those who inspired students during the movement in Bangladesh in July-August 2024. He is the originator of ’36 July,’ a concept that added a new dimension to the student movement.
