Rtd Major Gen Mohiuddin gets bail over New Gini attack

A Dhaka court has granted bail to retired Major General Golam Mohiuddin Chowdhury in a case filed over the attack, vandalism and looting at New Gini Properties in the capital’s ECB Chattar.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrates’ Court granted him bail on Monday after he was produced before the court following a three-day remand, said Sub-Inspector Tarequr Rahman of the prosecution department.

The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested Chowdhury from a house in Segunbagicha on September 30. The following day, the court granted police permission to interrogate him in custody for three days.

After the remand ended, investigating officer Jehad Hossain, a DB inspector, sought an order to keep him in jail.

Defence lawyer Mohammad Abul Kalam Khan, general secretary of the Dhaka Bar Association, appealed for bail.

Following the hearing, the court granted Chowdhury bail on a Tk 2,000 bond until October 28, the next date of hearing.

Attack on New Gini Properties
The attack, vandalism and looting took place on the night of September 26 at the New Gini Properties housing project in South Manikdi under Cantonment Police Station.

The vandalism also affected content creator Salman Muqtadir’s “Brownfish” studio, which is located within the housing project.

New Gini Properties Director Md Saiful Islam Bhuiyan filed a case with Cantonment Police Station, naming 13 people, including Chowdhury, and 150 to 200 unidentified others.

Beyond Gate 1 of the New Gini project, near Muqtadir’s studio, the project’s boundary ends a short distance away. It borders a 35-katha, or 0.23-hectare, plot earmarked for a separate housing project that has yet to begin construction.

Several New Gini officials and police personnel involved in the investigation said the dispute began over access to the proposed housing project and gradually escalated.

According to them, Chowdhury, who is the fourth accused in the case, and several others wanted to develop a housing project on the plot.

However, there is no suitable road around the site, leaving the road through Gate 1 of the New Gini project as the only access route.

The day after the incident, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed also referred to the dispute during a media briefing at the Secretariat.

He said a dispute over ownership of around 35 kathas of land in Manikdi had been ongoing between New Gini Properties and a retired senior military officer.

“When one side tried to seize the disputed land under cover of night, a tin-shed studio of content creator [Salman] was vandalised,” the minister said.
