Women’s Asia Cup kicks-off today

The 10th edition of Women’s Asia Cup is getting underway from today. This edition will be held in the T20I format. So far, the Women’s Asia Cup has been held in four ODIs and six T20I formats.

Hong Kong and Thailand will face each other in the opening match of the 10th edition in Dubai.

The match will start at 8:30pm (Bangladesh Standard Time).

The tournament will start in the United Arab Emirates from today and will continue until September 13. Eight teams splitting into two groups are taking part in the upcoming tournament.

Bangladesh are in Group ‘B’. Their other three opponents of Bangladesh are current champions Sri Lanka, hosts United Arab Emirates and Indonesia.
Bangladesh will face Indonesia in their first Group-B match on August 31.

Then Bangladesh will take on Sri Lanka in their second Group-B match on September 6 and the Tigresses will face off United Arab Emirates in their last Group-B match on September 8.

Bangladesh Captain Nigar Sultana Joty has set her sights on reaching the final of this year’s Women’s T20 Asia Cup. Before leaving the country, she said in a press conference, “Our main goal is to play in the final.

Because we have been eliminated from the semi-finals several times. This time we want to break the semi-finals barrier.”

She also said, “Our batting as a team is doing quite well. Especially if the top-order bats well in this tournament, I think we will have a good chance of playing in the final. The group stage matches are much more important.”

Bangladesh have won the Asia Cup title once so far. Bangladesh won the title by defeating India by 3 wickets in the 2018 Asia Cup held in Malaysia. The Tigresses also reached the semi-finals in 2012 and 2024.

Meanwhile, India, Pakistan, Thailand and Hong Kong are in Group-A. Each team in the group will play against each other once.

The top four teams in both groups will play in the semi-finals. The champions of Group-A will take on the runners-up of Group-B in the first semi-final on September 10, while the champions of the Group-B will meet the runner-up of Group-A in the second semi-final on the same day.

The winning team of the semi-finals will get the tickets of the final. The final of the Asia Cup will be held on September 13.

India have won the title a maximum of seven times so far. Sri Lanka have won the title once along with Bangladesh.

In addition, Sri Lanka have runners-up five times, while India and Pakistan have runners-up twice each.
