62,637 cases disposed in 12 working days

The High Court Division of the Supreme Court has disposed of 62,637 old cases, including criminal miscellaneous and writ cases, in 12 working days under a special initiative taken following directives from the Chief Justice.

Supreme Court Public Relations Officer Md Shafiqul Islam confirmed the development on Friday, August 14.

He said 13 criminal motion benches of the High Court Division disposed of 5,405 old criminal miscellaneous cases on Thursday, August 13.

With the latest disposals, the number of old criminal miscellaneous cases resolved in 12 working days has reached 55,730. Altogether, 62,637 long-pending criminal miscellaneous and writ cases have been disposed of since the special initiative began.

The initiative is aimed at reducing the backlog of cases, ensuring speedier justice for litigants and improving the efficiency of the judicial system.

Since May 7, judges of the High Court Division’s criminal motion and writ motion benches have been giving priority to long-pending cases on designated days each week.

Under the Chief Justice’s directives, the benches will continue prioritising and disposing of old cases as part of the ongoing drive to reduce the judicial backlog.

The process will continue in the coming days, according to the Supreme Court.
