Twin threats, one crisis

Bangladesh continues to battle two major disease outbreaks, with hundreds of new dengue and suspected measles cases adding pressure to the country’s health system

Bangladesh is facing mounting public health concerns as dengue continues to spread while the country is already struggling with a prolonged measles outbreak.

One more dengue patient died in the past 24 hours, taking this year’s death toll to 40, according to the Directorate General of Health Services.

The latest death was reported under Dhaka South City Corporation.

During the same period, 439 new dengue patients were admitted to hospitals across the country, raising the total number of recorded cases this year to 12,640.

Meanwhile, 416 patients recovered and were discharged from hospitals. The number of recoveries has now reached 11,497.

The dengue situation has added further pressure to the health sector amid an alarming measles outbreak that has already caused hundreds of deaths.

As of July 17, the combined number of confirmed and suspected measles-related deaths had reached 780. Of them, 95 were laboratory-confirmed measles deaths, while 685 were classified as suspected deaths.

Authorities also recorded 873 new suspected measles cases within 24 hours, taking the cumulative number of suspected cases to 116,011.

The simultaneous spread of dengue and measles has raised concerns over hospital capacity, disease surveillance and the protection of children and other vulnerable groups.

While dengue transmission typically intensifies during the monsoon season, measles can spread rapidly among people who have not received adequate vaccination.

Health authorities have urged people to seek medical attention when symptoms appear, maintain clean surroundings to prevent mosquito breeding and ensure that children receive their scheduled vaccinations.
