DSEX sheds 47 points as stocks across majority sectors log negative returns

Weekly turnover and key benchmarks retreat on both Dhaka and Chittagong bourses; Pubali Bank, Walton, and LHBL lead decline while textile dominates trading volume

The country’s capital markets closed the week in negative territory, with the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) experiencing a decline in both benchmark indices and overall turnover as stocks across a majority of sectors registered negative returns.

The prime index of the Dhaka bourse, DSEX, fell by 47 points or nearly 1 percent over the five trading sessions to settle at 5,532 points, down from 5,578 points recorded at the end of the previous week.

The blue-chip DS30 index, comprising select high-performing companies, dropped 9 points to close at 2,104 points compared to 2,112 points a week earlier. Similarly, the DSES Shariah index slipped 16 points over the week to finish at 1,100 points, down from 1,116 points according to bonik barta report.

Out of 383 issues traded on the DSE during the week, 89 recorded price gains, 280 closed lower, 14 remained unchanged, and 28 saw no trading activity.

Shares of Pubali Bank, Walton Hi-Tech Industries, LafargeHolcim Bangladesh Limited (LHBL), Bank Asia, and British American Tobacco Bangladesh contributed the most to the weekly benchmark drop.

A sectoral analysis of trading volume shows that the textile sector dominated market turnover, capturing 26.4 percent of total weekly transactions on the DSE.

General Insurance followed in second place with an 18.6 percent share, while Pharmaceuticals & Chemicals ranked third, accounting for 10.9 percent.

Mutual Funds and Banking sectors secured fourth and fifth positions, holding 8.0 percent and 6.1 percent of total turnover, respectively.

Most sectors posted negative capital returns during the week, led by the Services sector, which suffered the largest decline of 3.8 percent.

The Paper sector declined by 3.7 percent, Ceramics and Information Technology each dropped 3.1 percent, and Cement lost 2.8 percent. On the other hand, Textiles and Jute managed positive returns of 1.4 percent and 1.3 percent, respectively.

In line with the capital city’s trend, the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) also witnessed losses. The CASPI benchmark index fell by nearly 1 percent to close at 14,832 points against 14,912 points the previous week, while the CSCX index shed nearly 1 percent to end at 9,101 points.

Total turnover on the CSE reached Tk 138 crore, with 107 advancing, 169 declining, and 17 unchanged out of 293 traded issues.
