Switzerland beat Algeria

Switzerland secured a comfortable 2-0 victory over Algeria on Thursday to advance to the FIFA World Cup Round of 16, producing a disciplined display here at BC Place to keep their hopes of a deep tournament run alive.

Breel Embolo handed the Swiss an early advantage after a well-worked move orchestrated by rising star Johan Manzambi.

The 20-year-old burst down the left wing before delivering a precise low cross into the penalty area, where Embolo applied a simple finish to put Switzerland ahead.

Manzambi continued his impressive World Cup campaign by registering his second assist of the tournament.

The young attacker has also scored three goals in four appearances despite being named in the starting line-up on only two occasions, underlining his growing importance to the Swiss side.

Switzerland doubled their lead just a minute after the restart when Dan Ndoye reacted quickest to a loose ball on the edge of the area.

The forward kept his composure before placing a clinical finish beyond Algeria goalkeeper Luca Zidane, leaving the North Africans with little chance of mounting a comeback.

The Swiss controlled proceedings for the remainder of the contest, restricting Algeria to limited opportunities while maintaining their defensive solidity to record a deserved clean sheet.

Having suffered Round of 16 exits at the 2006, 2014, 2018 and 2022 World Cups, Switzerland will be determined to end that sequence of disappointments.

The three-time World Cup quarter-finalists have not progressed beyond the last 16 since reaching the final eight on home soil in 1954, and they will hope this campaign marks a long-awaited breakthrough.
