AI traffic fines to curb extortion
An artificial intelligence-based automated fine system launched on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway is expected to curb extortion while making traffic law enforcement more transparent, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said today.
The AI-powered automated fine system will detect traffic violations and enable authorities to take action without relying solely on conventional traffic enforcement, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said.
He made the remarks after inaugurating the system at Meghnaghat in Sonargaon, Narayanganj, around noon.
The system will identify violations including speeding, illegal parking, operation of three-wheelers and driving on the wrong side of the road, the minister said.
He said the technology would help curb extortion on the highway while improving enforcement of traffic laws.
The Highway Police introduced the system to improve road safety, strengthen traffic discipline and ensure greater transparency in traffic enforcement.
According to the Highway Police, 1,427 AI-enabled cameras have been installed along nearly 250 kilometres of the highway, covering the stretch from Signboard in Narayanganj to Chattogram City Gate.
Once a vehicle is detected violating traffic rules, details of the offence will be sent to the registered owner’s mobile phone through SMS.
The vehicle owner will then be able to pay the fine through a designated mobile banking service, according to the police.
The automated system is expected to reduce dependence on manual enforcement while creating a technology-based mechanism for detecting violations and collecting fines.
