IUB student killed in Dhaka road crash days before Aus trip

A university student preparing to leave for Australia for higher studies was killed in a road accident in Dhaka’s Fakirapool area early Tuesday, just days before his scheduled flight.

The deceased was identified as Arafat Rahman Shawon, 19, son of Md Lutfor Rahman. He was a first-year BBA student at Independent University, Bangladesh.

Shawon hailed from the Baro Deora Ansar Ali Road area of Gazipur and lived with his family in Dhaka’s Madhubagh area.

His mother, Sultana Akter, said Shawon was preparing to pursue higher studies in Australia and was scheduled to fly there on June 30.

She said her son went out on a motorcycle with friends at night to watch a football match.
Around midnight, while passing through Fakirapool, the motorcycle collided with a pedestrian who was crossing the road.

The pedestrian was injured, while Shawon sustained severe injuries.
He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of the DMCH police camp, said the body was kept at the hospital morgue.

The injured pedestrian was receiving treatment at the emergency department.
