Chinese communist party to visit Dhaka

China will continue to support Bangladesh’s development, while the Minister of the International Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (IDCPC) is expected to visit Dhaka later this year, signalling continued high-level engagement between the two countries.

The development came during a farewell call on by Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen to State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday.

During the meeting, Kobir appreciated Ambassador Wen’s contribution to strengthening Bangladesh-China relations during his three-year-and-nine-month tenure in Dhaka.

The state minister also praised Wen’s role in facilitating the successful visit of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to China, describing it as an important development in bilateral relations.

Kobir noted that Bangladesh-China relations had been elevated to the level of a “Shared Community” during Ambassador Wen’s tenure.

He also referred to the establishment of new institutional mechanisms to deepen bilateral cooperation, including the proposed State Minister-level 2+2 dialogue.

The 2+2 mechanism is expected to provide a structured platform for discussions on a broader range of bilateral, regional and international issues involving the two countries.

Ambassador Wen said it had been an honour for him to serve in Bangladesh for three years and nine months.

He congratulated Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman on his election as President of the 81st United Nations General Assembly and reaffirmed Beijing’s continued support for Bangladesh’s development.

The ambassador also informed the state minister that the IDCPC minister plans to visit Bangladesh later this year.

The proposed visit is expected to provide another opportunity for the two sides to discuss party-to-party relations and broader bilateral cooperation, as the Bangladesh-China relationship continues to expand beyond traditional economic and development cooperation.

Kobir thanked Ambassador Wen for his contributions during his tenure and wished him success in his new assignment.

Ambassador Wen’s departure comes at a time when Dhaka and Beijing are seeking to further institutionalise their expanding engagement.

The planned visit by the IDCPC minister, along with the proposed 2+2 mechanism, could provide fresh platforms for political dialogue and coordination between the two countries.
