BCG seizes illegal nets worth Tk 139cr in Munshiganj
The Bangladesh Coast Guard (BCG) on Friday seized banned current nets and thread reels valued at around Tk 139.29 crore during a special operation in Munshiganj.
BCG Media Officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujan confirmed the development.
He said that, acting on a tip-off, a team from Coast Guard Station Pagla conducted a raid at around 7am in the Durgabari and Sipahi Para areas near Panchasar under Munshiganj Sadar Police Station.
During the drive, Coast Guard personnel searched three net-making factories and two warehouses.
The operation led to the recovery of 3 crore 97 lakh 45 thousand metres of illegal current nets and 30,000 thread reels used in manufacturing the prohibited nets.
The total market value of the seized items is estimated at Tk 139.29 crore. The seized materials were later destroyed to prevent their use in illegal fishing.
Sabbir Alam Sujan added that the BCG will continue such drives to protect the country’s fisheries resources from the harmful effects of illegal nets.
