24,000 litres fuel seized in Mymensingh

A refuelling station owner has been fined Tk 200,000 after authorities seized 24,000 litres of fuel illegally stored at the facility in Mymensingh’s Phulpur Upazila.

The authorities raided the petrol pump called “Messrs Popy Traders” at Amuakanda on Payari Road on Saturday, said Upazila administrator (UNO) Sadia Islam Shima, who led the drive.

It comes amid a nationwide crackdown against illegal fuel hoarders. Carried out under the Consumer Rights Protection Act 2009, the mobile court found 4,500 litres of petrol and 19,500 litres of diesel in small reservoirs of the pump, Sadia said.

Later, measures were taken to sell the seized fuel to the general public, she added, vowing to continue such operations to help resolve the fuel crisis, reports bdnews24.com.

Meanwhile, the Haluaghat Upazila administration in a drive seized 230 litres of fuel on Friday night.
The government on Friday formed specialised vigilance teams across all districts to curb the illegal fuel trade amid a crisis driven by the Iran war.

It also announced a reward scheme for informants to help gather intelligence on illegal fuel hoarding.
