Over 100 detained

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) detained more than 100 people from the central office of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) at the GPO intersection in Gulistan on Saturday, following information that suspected Awami League leaders and activists had gathered there.

Police conducted the raid at around 2:30pm and cordoned off the office before taking the detainees to Paltan Police Station for questioning and verification.

Police said they had received information that leaders and activists of the JSD and the Awami League were holding a meeting at the office.

Abu Jafar Surjo, former president of a faction of the Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ), was also detained from the location and taken to Paltan Police Station. Later, a photograph of Surjo in handcuffs was posted on his Facebook account. In the post, he said he had been taken away while attending a JSD representative meeting.

Paltan Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Arifur Islam said some people had been brought to the station based on specific intelligence.

“They are being interrogated and verified. Legal proceedings will be initiated after the verification process is completed,” he said.

DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media) Md Akter Hossain said police received information that slogans, including “Joy Bangla”, were being chanted at the JSD office.

He said 30 to 40 suspected individuals had initially been taken to the police station and that their identities and involvement were being verified.

Meanwhile, police said Awami League supporters had brought out a flash procession in Dhanmondi at around noon on Saturday. Several crude bombs, locally known as cocktails, were reportedly exploded during the procession.

Police subsequently conducted raids in Dhanmondi and Mohammadpur and arrested four people, recovering hand bombs from them, according to police sources.

Police said some participants in the Dhanmondi procession later took shelter at the JSD office in Gulistan.

The situation drew the attention of local political activists, and Rabiul Islam Nayan, joint general secretary of the BNP’s Jubo Dal central executive committee, along with local Jubo Dal leaders and activists, reportedly surrounded the office.

Later, Harun-or-Rashid, deputy commissioner of DMP’s Motijheel Division, arrived at the scene with a large police contingent.

Around 4pm, several people were seen being brought out of the JSD office one by one, some of them in handcuffs.

Police said the operation was continuing and that further legal action would depend on the findings of interrogation and verification.
