Tigers face off Malaysia in qtr-finals

The practice session of Bangladesh cricket team was not held due to heavy downpour at Aichi-Nagoya in Japan on Saturday. The players went out for a walk with umbrella to pass their time.

Bangladesh’s opponent for the Asian Games cricket quarter-final has been confirmed. Litton Das’s team will face off Malaysia in their last-eight clash.

Malaysia secured their spot in the quarter-finals as Group-B champions after their final group match was washed out by rain on Saturday.

Malaysia was scheduled to play against Oman yesterday, but persistent rain made it impossible even to conduct the toss.

The match was eventually abandoned, and the points were shared between the two teams. Consequently, Malaysia finished at the top of Group-B with three points from two matches, securing their place in the quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong finished runners-up with two points. Oman, having earned only one point, was eliminated in the group stage. Hong Kong, the Group-B runners-up, will face Pakistan in the quarter-finals.

Nepal and Afghanistan have advanced to the quarter-finals from Group- A. Group-A match between Nepal and Japan was scheduled for Saturday in this group, but it was also washed out by rain. As a result, hosts Japan were eliminated in the group stage.

Nepal, the group toppers, are set to play against Sri Lanka in the quarter-finals. In the same round, Afghanistan will face India. India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan had already secured direct entry into the quarter-finals, according to the latest International Cricket Council (ICC) rankings.

The quarter-final matches begin next Monday. Pakistan and Hong Kong will take the field at 6:00am (Bangladesh Standard Time). Later that day, at 11:00am, India will face Afghanistan in the second quarter-final.

Bangladesh’s match is scheduled to start for Tuesday at 11:00am. Earlier that day, at 6:00am, Nepal will take on Sri Lanka.

Bangladesh and Malaysia have faced each other only once in international cricket so far.

In that match-played during the 2023 Asian Games in China-Bangladesh defeated Malaysia by 2 runs to advance to the semi-finals.

Recently, the Malaysia cricket team visited Bangladesh and played a series against the Bangladesh High Performance team.
