CU student’s hanging body recovered

Staff Reporter :

Omar Faruk Sumon, a student in the Chittagong University’s Arabic Department from the 2021-22 session, has been found dead at a flat in the port city in an apparent suicide.

He was discovered hanging from a ceiling fan hook at a residence on Road No. 5 in the Khulshi area on Thursday evening, according to Khulshi Police Station chief (OC) Shahinur Zaman. Sumon had been living in his maternal uncle’s apartment with his elder brother, while the uncle and aunt are currently abroad. According to police, Sumon’s brother returned home to find the door locked from inside. After breaking it open, he discovered Sumon’s hanging body. A note was recovered from the residence, said OC Shahinur.

According to police and Suman’s classmates, the note read: “I am Sumon, Omar Faruk Sumon. I have no hopes or expectations. I have no complaints against anyone. Please stay well. All my grievances are with myself.

So it is better not to look for reasons behind this.”
Another note dated Dec 1 read: “Hope is life, hope is death. Failure leads to despair and darkness.”

A classmate, quoting Sumon’s brother, said the student had phoned him around 4pm to ask how long he would take to return home. After that, Sumon could not be reached.
When attempts to contact him failed, the building caretaker was sent to the flat but received no response from inside.
