Man sentenced to death for killing wife

A court in Kishoreganj on Monday sentenced a man to death for killing his wife in Bajitpur upazila of Kishoreganj in 2016. Kishoreganj Additional Sessions Judge, First Court, Supriya Rahman announced the verdict in the absence of the accused on Monday afternoon. The court also fined him Tk 1 lakh.

The convicted man, Ismail alias Sagar Mia, is the son of Ayet Ali of Uttar Sarachar village in Bajitpur upazila. Additional Public Prosecutor Advocate Abul Monsur confirmed the verdict.

According to the case diary (CD), Ismail Sagar Mia had been torturing and beating his wife, Jharna Akhter, for a long time over various family issues. Unable to bear her husband’s torture, Jharna Akhter moved from her rented house in Gazipur to her mother’s house in Nilkhi Nayahat, Bajitpur upazila, around 11pm on April 11, 2016, with her two daughters.

There, she told her mother about the torture she had suffered at the hands of her husband.
The following night, April 12, Jharna Akhter was repeatedly stabbed by Ismail Sagar Mia while she was cooking at her mother’s house.

She was taken to Zahurul Islam Medical College and Hospital in critical condition, where doctors on duty declared her dead.

Following the incident, the victim’s mother, Zahera Begum, filed a case against Ismail Sagar Mia and two other unidentified persons with Bajitpur Police Station.

After a lengthy judicial process, the court delivered the verdict on Monday.
