PM returns home after UNGA visit

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has returned to Dhaka after a five-day visit to the United States, during which he addressed the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and held around 30 bilateral and sideline meetings with world leaders and senior international officials.

The prime minister arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 8:21am on Sunday, following his participation in the UNGA general debate and a series of diplomatic engagements in New York.

“An Emirates flight carrying the prime minister, his wife Dr Zubaida Rahman and members of his entourage reached Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport via Dubai around 8:21am,” said PM’s Deputy Press Secretary Hasan Shiplu.

After a six-hour transit in Dubai, the Emirates flight departed Dubai International Airport for Dhaka at 2:15am local time, Shiplu said.

Tarique arrived in Dubai from New York at 8:23pm local time on Saturday aboard an Emirates flight, having left New York on Friday night.

At John F Kennedy International Airport, the prime minister and his wife were seen off by Bangladesh Ambassador to the United States Tareq Md Ariful Islam, Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the UN Irene Khan, and senior officials of the Bangladesh embassy and permanent mission to the United Nations.

Tarique arrived in New York on September 21 to attend the UNGA session and delivered his maiden address as prime minister during the general debate on September 24.

His participation in the high-level gathering provided an opportunity for Bangladesh to articulate its position on international issues and strengthen engagement with global leaders and multilateral institutions.

During the five-day visit, the prime minister held around 30 bilateral and sideline meetings with heads of state and government, senior international officials and representatives of international organisations.

The engagements covered a range of diplomatic and international cooperation issues, reflecting Bangladesh’s efforts to expand its international partnerships and advance its interests through bilateral and multilateral platforms.

The visit marked Tarique’s first participation in the UN General Assembly as head of government and formed part of his administration’s broader diplomatic engagement with the international community.
