Old Dhaka celebrates kite flying

Different organisations including Bangladesh Kite Federation at the kite flying festival organised at the Leather Technology playground in the old part of the city on Saturday marking Poush Sankranti and Shakhrain Day.

The azure sky of the Old part of Dhaka city was sailed by thousands of colourful flying kites on the first day of the Bengali month of Magh, known as Shakhrain festival tothe Hindu community. From the dawn of the morning to midnight, the inhabitants of old city snubbing the smiting cold, assembled on their roofs and open spaces to fly gaudy kites, rupturing crackers and various fireworks on Saturday.
The kites appeared like dragons, butterflies, elephants, monsters and tigers. In the evening, the vivid fireworks created dazzling rainbow.
The Jagannath University playground at Dhuphkhola, Babubazar and Postagola bridges in the old city were impounded by people to fly kites. Like other years, people of different areas of the city attended the festival to witness rapturous cerulean kite-fighting and fireworks.
Both the permanent and tentative shops of the old city had a variety of traditional sweets and cakes to mark the occasion.
Koilash Biswas, a sweet seller of Shakharibazar stated, “The city residents of all ages love to eat puli, vapa and vapapuli pitha and fly kites during the Shakhrain festival and they never miss the festival”..
Although it is a festival of the Hindu community, these days people belonging to other communities also take part.
Spouses Md. Younus Ali and Bina Khatun from Munshigonj were at Postagola Bridge to enjoy the festivals.
“Every year we try heart and soul to come to Old Dhaka to enjoy this unusual festival.”
Kotowali Thana OC Abul Hassan told The New Nation that special security measures were taken to ensure security of the festival.
