Maize cultivation increasing in Rangpur region

RANGPUR: Tended maize plants growing excellent in a field as cultivation of the cereal crop continues in full swing in Rangpur Agriculture Zone during the current Rabi season.

The enthusiastic farmers have been continuing cultivation of maize in all five districts under Rangpur agriculture region during the current Rabi season.
According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources, target of producing 7.97 lakh tonnes of maize from 99,633 hectares of land has been fixed for the region this season.
The farmers have so far brought 68,018 hectares of land or 68.27 per cent of the targeted land area under maize cultivation in Rangpur, Gaibandha, Kurigram, Nilphamari and Lalmonirhat districts in the region.
Horticulture Specialist of the DAE Khondker Md. Mesbahul Islam today told BSS that the farmers had been showing more interest in maize cultivation after getting repeated bumper production and lucrative price in recent years. “Cultivation of maize has already become popular in the region and contributing largely to the economy,” he said.
He added, the char and riverside people have been farming maize in more land this season as they earned huge profits in recent years through farming the cash crops in their sandy and barren char lands.
Extension Agronomist Anarul Haque at Dinajpur Hub of International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center predicted bumper maize output this season in the region following various government initiatives.
“Enhancing cultivation of low-irrigation consuming cereal crops like maize and wheat instead of Boro farming would save huge underground water,” Anarul said.
Rangpur Regional Additional Director of DAE Shah Alam said that maize cultivation had been increasing every year and benefiting the farmers including the poor people.
Mainstreaming of disabled people underscored
Speakers here underscored the need for establishing disabled-friendly atmosphere and ensuring rights to education, health services and dignity for the disabled children by flourishing their inherent talents and abilities.
They stressed on mainstreaming and empowering the people with
disabilities through coordinated efforts of government and non-government organizations.
The opinion came at a discussion styled ‘Mainstreaming of the intellectually disabled and vision impaired people’ arranged by Dristi Sangstha Buddhi Protibondhi Biddyalaya (DSBPB) at its auditorium yesterday.
Deputy Commissioner Md Rahat Anwar attended the discussion as the chief guest with chairman of the governing committee of DSBPB) Mir Anisul Haque Payara in the chair.
Deputy Director of the Department of Social Services Abdur Razzaque, District Women Affairs Officer Kawser Pervin and Sadar Upazila Education Officer Afroza Jasmine addressed as special guests.
Headmaster of DSBPB Ashik Iqbal narrated about the academic and extracurricular activities being conducted in the institution for the intellectually disabled, autistic and vision impaired children.
Speakers called upon the government and non-governmental development
organisations for taking more coordinated steps to ensure development, empowerment, job opportunities, constitutional rights and social security for the people with special needs.
Deputy Commissioner Md Rahat Anwar said the present government has taken massive steps and increased the number of beneficiaries and allowances for the physically challenged people, one-stop-services and education for mainstreaming through ensuring their developments.
He urged for ensuring supports to the autistic, intellectually disabled and physically challenged children.
