Yasser calls social media misinformation an ‘ominous sign’

State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Yasser Khan Choudhury has urged young people to remain aware and play a responsible role in countering misinformation and disinformation, describing their spread through social media as an “ominous sign”.

“Misinformation and false information on social media have emerged as an ‘ominous sign’, and it is crucial for young people to play an cautious and responsible role to encounter them,” he said.

The state minister made the remarks while addressing the closing ceremony of the Second National Media Carnival 2026 as the chief guest at Notre Dame College in Dhaka on Saturday, according to a press release.

Yasser said the student community of Bangladesh had always played a pioneering role in nation-building.

He said the role of students in the 2024 student-people’s movement would also be written in golden letters in history.

Distinguishing between truth and falsehood has become a major challenge in the current era of rapid information flow, he said.

“It is very important for students to acquire media literacy and responsible communication skills,” he added.

Recalling his time as a student at Notre Dame College, Yasser said he had previously visited the institution with his friends and that many memories of that period remained etched in his mind.
“Coming to this campus has brought back many old memories,” he said.

Yasser expressed hope that regular organisation of such media carnivals would help students make further progress in creativity, analytical skills and responsible citizenship.

He said the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting was working continuously on these issues under the directives of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

Noting the prime minister’s interest in young people, the state minister said government support for such initiatives would continue in the future.

The two-day Media Carnival was organised by the Notre Dame Media and Communication Club on October 2 and 3.

Students from different educational institutions across the country participated in the event, which served as a platform for developing skills in media, communication, research and creativity.

Principal of Notre Dame College Dr Father Hemanto Pius Rozario, Father Anthony Gomes Rozario, Moderator of Notre Dame Media and Communication Club Shapla Banik, Chairman of ‘The Bangladesh Dialogue’ Rubayat Mannan Rafi, NCC Bank Vice President and Head of Financial Division Anisur Rahman Majumder, CEO of China Education Bangladesh Sazzad Hossain and Simran Rahman of the Brand and Communication Department of the University of Scholars were present at the event.
