DMP outlines security, traffic plans for Durga Puja

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed has said police will remain on maximum alert to ensure the safe and peaceful celebration of the upcoming Sharadiya Durga Puja across the capital.

“The DMP will take all necessary measures to ensure that devotees can celebrate the festival peacefully at every puja mandap in Dhaka,” he said.

The commissioner made the remarks while chairing a meeting on security, law and order and traffic management for Sharadiya Durga Puja at DMP Headquarters on Tuesday morning.

Describing this year’s Durga Puja as an “acid test”, Mosleh Uddin said it would be the first major Hindu religious festival to be celebrated during the tenure of the current democratic government.

He said comprehensive security measures had been taken covering Mahalaya, the Durga Puja celebrations and the immersion of idols.

According to the DMP chief, every puja mandap in the capital will be brought under CCTV surveillance, while mandap in-charges will perform their duties wearing body-worn cameras.

Uniformed and plainclothes police personnel will remain deployed throughout the festival.
SWAT, the Crisis Response Team, Quick Response Team, crime scene vans and bomb disposal units will also remain ready round the clock to respond to emergencies.

Addressing leaders of puja celebration committees, the DMP commissioner urged them to remain vigilant and play an active role in ensuring security at their respective mandaps.

He asked committee members and volunteers to closely monitor everyone entering the premises, including visitors.

In case of an emergency, he advised them to contact the National Emergency Service 999 or the nearest police station.

Mosleh Uddin expressed hope that collective efforts would ensure that Durga Puja was celebrated safely, peacefully and in a festive atmosphere.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Operations) Mohammad Shahidullah gave a PowerPoint presentation outlining the DMP’s detailed security, law-and-order and traffic management plans for the public celebration.

Representatives of various puja celebration committees sought full cooperation from the DMP to ensure security at the mandaps and smooth traffic management during the festival.

Additional Police Commissioner (Protection and Diplomatic Security) Md Abul Bashar Talukder, Additional Police Commissioner (Detective Branch) Md Shafiqul Islam, Additional Police Commissioner (Logistics, Finance and Procurement) Md Masud Karim, Additional Police Commissioner (Special Response Unit) Mohammad Shamsul Haque, Additional Police Commissioner (Estate, Development and ICT) and Additional Commissioner (Crime and Ops) Mohammad Osman Gani, among other senior DMP officials and puja committee leaders, attended the meeting.
