PM announces pay hike, benefits for Gram Police
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Saturday announced a salary increase and expanded benefits for Gram Police, raising monthly pay for members to Tk 10,500 from Tk 7,500 and for their chiefs to Tk 11,000 from Tk 8,000.
The new arrangements will take effect from today, he said while addressing a rally of Gram Police at the National Parade Ground in Dhaka, marking National Revolution and Solidarity Day.

The prime minister also announced an increase in retirement gratuities. Gram Police members will receive Tk 80,000, up from Tk 50,000, while chiefs’ gratuities will rise to Tk 1 lakh from Tk 80,000.
Each Gram Police member will receive a monthly mobile phone allowance of Tk 150 to make communication easier, he said.
The weekly allowance for travelling to police stations will also be increased from Tk 300 to Tk 500 for members. Chiefs will receive Tk 600 for the purpose.
Tarique Rahman said the government had taken steps to improve the financial and professional dignity of Gram Police, rather than merely changing their designations.
Those previously known as ‘Mohalladar’ and ‘Dafadar’ will now be called Gram Police members and Gram Police chiefs, respectively, he said.
The prime minister announced that two additional women Gram Police members would be recruited in every union to promote women’s empowerment and create employment opportunities. Maternity leave for women members will also be extended to six months.
To recognise the contribution of Gram Police, a long road in every union will be named after the force, he said.
Trees will be planted along both sides of the roads, and proceeds from selling the trees will be distributed among Gram Police members of the respective unions, he added.
The prime minister also said he would ask the Local Government Ministry to arrange new bicycles for Gram Police members every three to three-and-a-half years, instead of the existing five-year interval.
Dr Zubaida Rahman, the prime minister’s wife and vice-president of the Ziaur Rahman Foundation, was present at the rally.
