Rangpur-3 MP calls strict enforcement of traffic laws

Rangpur-3 lawmaker Mahbubur Rahman Belal speaks at a discussion in the district on Wednesday, marking the National Road Safety Day 2026 .

Mahbubur Rahman Belal, member of parliament (MP) for the Rangpur-3 constituency, said that enacting laws alone is not enough to prevent road accidents; their strict enforcement is equally important.

Every citizen must be aware of road safety and take responsibility for raising awareness among others instead of relying solely on the administration or the legal system, he said at a discussion held at the conference room of the Rangpur Deputy Commissioner’s Office on Wednesday, marking the National Road Safety Day 2026 .

Through collective efforts and responsible behaviour, a disciplined and safe road transport system can be established, he added. Referring to the risks posed by unlicensed drivers and illegal vehicles, lawmaker Belal said driving without a valid licence and the operation of unauthorised vehicles on highways often increases the risk of accidents.

He called on the administration to take stricter measures against unlicensed driving and those who violate traffic laws. He also urged the authorities to ensure that no lawbreaker is spared because of political or other forms of influence, stressing the importance of establishing the rule of law.

The discussion meeting was chaired by Rangpur Deputy Commissioner Israt Jahan. Special guests included Rangpur Divisional Commissioner Md. Jahangir Alam, District Council Administrator Md. Saiful Islam, Local Government Division Director Md. Abu Zafar, and BRTA Divisional Director Subrata Kumar Debnath, among others.

The meeting was organised jointly by the Rangpur District Administration and the Rangpur Circle of the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) to mark National Road Safety Day 2026. This year’s theme was “Safe Roads, a Prosperous Country; Bangladesh First.”

On the occasion, the BRTA distributed guidelines and leaflets among five categories of stakeholders: motor vehicle drivers, motorcyclists, vehicle owners, passengers and pedestrians.

Certificates and crests were also awarded to four outstanding drivers in recognition of their safe driving practices.

Government officials, representatives of voluntary organisations, students and journalists attended the programme.

Earlier, a colourful rally was brought out from the premises of the Rangpur Deputy Commissioner’s Office. The rally proceeded along various roads in the city before returning to its starting point.
