Red Crescent steps up dengue prevention efforts

Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) launched a cleanliness drive at its national headquarters, Holy Family Red Crescent Medical College Hospital and nearby areas on Monday to strengthen dengue prevention and control efforts.

BDRCS Chairman Barrister Abdus Salam inaugurated the campaign in the morning under the Dengue Response Operation 2026.

Brigadier General Dr SM Humayun Kabir (retd), director of the BDRCS Health Department, and representatives of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), American Red Cross and Swiss Red Cross, among others, addressed the programme.

Speaking at the event, the BDRCS chairman said cleanliness, removing mosquito breeding grounds and raising public awareness were vital to preventing dengue.

He said the society had been conducting dengue prevention activities across the country in coordination with the government since September 12, following the prime minister’s call for stronger efforts to prevent the disease.

Under the Dengue Response Operation 2026, BDRCS has so far conducted 713 cleanliness drives and 179 public awareness campaigns using loudspeakers.

It has also carried out door-to-door and school-based awareness activities in Dhaka North and South city corporations and 15 district units. More than 400 youth volunteers are involved in these activities every day, he said.

The society has also provided 50,000 NS1 test kits, 70,000 bags of normal saline and 15,000 bags of baby saline to the Disease Control Division of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
