Unified journo gathering in Sylhet
At a gathering organised to protest the assault on journalists by intern doctors at Sylhet M.A.G. Osmani Medical College Hospital-which occurred while the journalists were performing their professional duties-journalism leaders stated that this despicable attack was an attempt to shackle independent journalism and the right to freedom of expression.
It serves as a severe blow to the legitimate right of the people of Sylhet to access healthcare services. This assault is not merely against the journalists; it is an attack on the entire population of Sylhet.
Osmani Medical College Hospital belongs to the people of Sylhet, and no form of criminal or violent activity will be tolerated there.
Journalists Reza Rubel and Nibendu Talukdar were attacked while carrying out their professional duties at Osmani Hospital. In protest, a gathering was held on Saturday in front of the Sylhet Central Shaheed Minar, initiated by journalists from all walks of life.
The event was attended by leaders of various journalistic organisations in Sylhet, politicians, representatives from social organizations, and other prominent figures.
Presided over by Sylhet Press Club President Muktabis-un-Noor and moderated by District Press Club General Secretary Mohammad Nasir Uddin, the gathering served as a call to action-not just for journalists, but for the entire population of Sylhet.
Speakers recalled that when intern doctors at Osmani Hospital had previously staged protests, journalists stood by them and provided media coverage; this support has now been “repaid” by leaving journalists bloodied.
The culture of disrupting medical services and holding patients hostage within the hospital cannot be allowed to continue.
Strongly condemning the assault on journalists during the discharge of their professional duties, the speakers demanded immediate legal action against the perpetrators.
