PM invites Marubeni to invest in IT, energy

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has invited Japanese business conglomerate Marubeni Corporation to explore investment opportunities in Bangladesh’s information technology, fertiliser and energy sectors, including a possible second Karnaphuli Fertilizer Company Limited (KAFCO) plant.
The invitation came when a high-level delegation led by Marubeni Corporation President and Chief Executive Officer Masayuki Omoto paid a courtesy call on the prime minister at his office at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Sunday morning, Deputy Press Secretary Shahadat Shadhin said.
During the meeting, Tarique Rahman highlighted the longstanding business relationship between Bangladesh and Marubeni, particularly in jute products, and called for expanding cooperation into new areas, Shadhin said.
The discussions covered potential investments in information technology (IT), artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, fertiliser and energy. The two sides also explored the possibility of establishing a second KAFCO plant in Bangladesh.
They discussed the potential of the country’s IT sector, the development of skilled workers and Bangladesh’s prospects for becoming an international service hub.
The prime minister highlighted the government’s plan to improve the IT and cybersecurity skills of Bangladeshi engineering graduates.
The meeting noted that the country could strengthen its position as an international service hub by using its skilled workforce, technological capabilities and competitive service offerings.
