DU sets January 26 for 54th convocation
The University of Dhaka (DU) has begun preparations for its 54th convocation, scheduled for January 26 next year, with applications from eligible graduates and medal recipients set to open on November 1.
A meeting to finalise arrangements for holding the ceremony in a smooth, orderly and festive atmosphere took place at the auditorium of Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban on Sunday, according to a university press release.
President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir is set to preside over the ceremony, while Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has consented to attend as the guest of honour.
Professor Dr Atsushi Sunami, president of Japan’s Sasakawa Peace Foundation (SPF), will attend as the convocation speaker and receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree.
Professor Dr Muhammad Harunur Rashid, a major donor to one of the university’s trust funds, will also receive an honorary Doctor of Science degree.
Graduates and medal recipients whose results were published between November 20, 2022, and November 30, 2026, will be eligible to participate in the convocation.
The university will accept applications from November 1 to November 30, 2026.
To coordinate the event, the meeting formed an executive committee, a management committee and several sub-committees tasked with overseeing different aspects of the ceremony.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr A B M Obaidul Islam chaired the meeting and called on all concerned to work together to ensure a smooth, peaceful and festive convocation.
He urged the sub-committees to begin their work immediately to ensure the successful organisation of the event.
The vice-chancellor also stressed the importance of collective efforts to advance education and research, maintain a conducive academic environment and strengthen the university’s international reputation.
