Lemur theft at Gazipur Safari Park to face strict action

Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo on Friday vowed strict action against those responsible for stealing lemurs from Gazipur Safari Park and directed officials to ensure proper care of the animals there.

The minister made the remarks while speaking to journalists after visiting Bhawal National Park and Gazipur Safari Park in the morning.

Mintoo said development work at Bhawal National Park was being carried out with an emphasis on wildlife conservation. He also said initiatives would be taken soon to make the park more attractive to visitors.

Three lemurs were stolen from Gazipur Safari Park on the night of March 23, 2025.

Two of the animals were reportedly smuggled out of Bangladesh and later found at a wildlife centre in a neighbouring country.

The minister’s remarks came as the authorities face questions over the theft and the need to ensure the safety and proper care of animals kept at the safari park.
